L-Carnitine is an endogenous amino acid derivative with a molecular formula of C7H15NO3, molecular weight of 161.20 g/mol, and CAS number 541-15-1. It is biosynthesized from lysine and methionine primarily in the liver and kidneys, and plays an essential role in mitochondrial fatty acid metabolism.
Research has established L-Carnitine’s primary function as the required cofactor for carnitine palmitoyltransferase (CPT) enzymes that transport long-chain fatty acids across the inner mitochondrial membrane for beta-oxidation.
